Is the high-end smartphone race about to enter a new era when RAM speed becomes a bigger differentiating factor than the processor?
According to many sources from Korea, SK Hynix is preparing to put the new generation LPDDR6 memory into mass production and begin shipping from the end of this year. Notably, Xiaomi is said to be the first partner to receive this batch of LPDDR6 chips to equip the next generation flagship models, most likely the Xiaomi 18 series.
LPDDR6 is a new generation of mobile RAM that succeeds LPDDR5X with the goal of significantly increasing data transfer bandwidth while reducing power consumption. SK Hynix said this memory line is manufactured on the sixth generation 10 nm process, targeting AI devices, high-end smartphones and high-performance computing platforms.
The partnership between Xiaomi and SK Hynix has lasted since 2013. Xiaomi used SK Hynix's LPDDR3 memory on the first generations of smartphones and continues to accompany LPDDR4, LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X standards. If this information is accurate, Xiaomi will continue to be the pioneering partner to deploy LPDDR6 before many other Android manufacturers.
Another important factor is that the memory market is going through a period of rising prices and supply is not really stable. Priority access to LPDDR6 chip sources can help Xiaomi be more proactive in production, reducing cost pressure.Develop and maintain the flagship launch plan on schedule.

If Xiaomi becomes the first company to commercialize LPDDR6, it will have advantages in multitasking performance, on-device AI processing, high-resolution video recording and gaming with larger memory bandwidth. This also creates competitive pressure on competitors such as Samsung, OPPO, vivo and HONOR in next year's flagship race.
Currently, both Xiaomi and SK Hynix have not yet made official confirmation. Therefore, information about Xiaomi 18 being the first smartphone to use LPDDR6 is still at the level of reports from Korean media and needs to wait for announcements from the two businesses before it can be confirmed for sure.
