Sony is preparing to launch Xperia 10 VIII but there are signs of continuing to use the previous generation's Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. Will users accept a new Xperia with almost unchanged processing power?

Sony Xperia 10 VIII has just appeared in Geekbench data before Sony holds a new Xperia event on August 25, 2026. The device carries the code XQ-GH54 and the initial information is creating quite an interesting debate, because instead of strongly upgrading the processing platform, benchmark data shows that Sony can continue to use Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, the chip that is already equipped on the Xperia 10 VII.

1. Xperia 10 VIII appears on Geekbench

According to data recorded before the launch date, Xperia 10 VIII code XQ-GH54 possesses 8 GB RAM and Qualcomm platform with code SM6475. This hardware code corresponds to Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, thereby strengthening the possibility of Sony continuing to use the Xperia 10 VII chipset instead of switching to a new SoC.

Benchmark results recorded by Geekbench tracking source were 871 single-core points and 3,028 multi-core points. This is not the basis to evaluate the entire actual experience because commercial performance depends on firmware, heat management, memory and the optimal level of the operating system.

2. The most controversial detail lies in Snapdragon 6 Gen 3

If this configuration is maintained on the commercial product, the Xperia 10 VIII will become a quite unusual upgrade. Sony can improve the screen, camera, battery, design or software, but the platform that largely determines CPU and GPU performance has not seen a clear generational jump.

This is even more notable when the Xperia 10 VII also uses Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. In other words, users waiting for the Xperia 10 VIII with the expectation of a performance jump may be disappointed if the Geekbench data accurately reflects the final configuration.

However, we should not conclude that the Xperia 10 VIII is a poor upgrade based on the chipset alone. Modern smartphones are also determined by screen quality, ISP and camera algorithms, battery life, cooling system, ability to maintain performance, connectivity, sound quality and software update policy.

3. Looking back at the Xperia 10 VI shows that Sony is not running in the configuration race

Xperia 10 VI in 2024 uses Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB UFS memory, microSDXC support up to 1.5 TB and 5,000 mAh battery. Sony also maintains the 3.5mm audio jack, front stereo speakers and many audio technologies that are increasingly rare on modern smartphones. (Sony Vietnam)

A Geekbench 6 result of the Xperia 10 VI recorded 947 single-core scores and 2,837 mobile scoresMulti-core magic. Absolute direct comparisons between different benchmarks should not be made, but this data at least shows that the Xperia 10 VIII is not currently showing an impressive CPU jump through the leaked results. (Geekbench)

Sony Xperia 10 VIII Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 8 GB 871 3,028
Sony Xperia 10 VI Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 8 GB 947 2,837

The scores in the table come from different Geekbench runs so are for reference only, not head-to-head tests under the same conditions. The Xperia 10 VIII is not yet a fully evaluated commercial device. (Geekbench)

4. What is Sony betting on if performance is not the focus?

The Xperia 10 series has long had a different approach than many Android smartphones in the same segment. Instead of trying to win the top spot in benchmarks, Sony often emphasizes long-term use experience, battery, lightweight design, sound and practical features.

The Xperia 10 VI is a clear example with a 5,000 mAh battery, microSDXC, 3.5mm headphone jack and front stereo speakers. These are features that can appeal to customers who want a more practical phone than racing for performance points. (Sony Vietnam)

The problem with the Xperia 10 VIII is therefore not simply the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. The more important question is what Sony will add to convince customers to upgrade from the Xperia 10 VII.

If the screen, camera, battery and design only change slightly while the SoC remains the same, the pressure on the Xperia 10 VIII price will be huge. On the contrary, if Sony improvesWhile improving the camera, battery life, software support and overall experience, chipset reuse can still be a conscious choice to control power and costs.

5. Software policy is becoming a notable advantage of Xperia

Sony currently lists the Xperia 10 VII with Android 15 upgraded to Android 16 and a security update deadline of August 2031. While Xperia 10 VI launched with Android 14 and is already on the roadmap to Android 16. (Sony)

That makes software one of the most important factors to watch on the Xperia 10 VIII. If Sony continues to maintain its long-term support policy, the value of the product will not be determined only by benchmark scores.

6. August 25 will decide whether the Xperia 10 VIII is really worth the wait

Sony has confirmed a new Xperia event on August 25, 2026, while device tracking sources believe that Xperia 10 VIII is the product preparing to appear. Price, camera configuration, screen, storage capacity and most of the remaining parameters have not been officially announced by Sony.

Therefore, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 and 8 GB RAM information should be considered pre-launch data and not the whole story.

But if the Xperia 10 VIII really keeps Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, Sony will have to prove that a new generation smartphone does not necessarily need a new chipset. And this is perhaps the most controversial question ahead of launch — in an Android market that continually promotes more powerful chips and more AI, is Sony's philosophy of just enough upgrades still viable?Convince users to spend money to buy Xperia 10 VIII?
