🤔 If AR glasses in the next few years are 15 to 20 times brighter than high-end phone screens, will smartphones gradually lose their central role and give way to smart wearable devices?

Samsung Display has just created a highlight at the AWE USA 2026 event when introducing new micro-OLED RGB OLEDoS screen technology with brightness up to 40,000 nits. This is considered one of the biggest advances in the XR augmented reality industry in recent years, paving the way for a generation of AR glasses and MR mixed reality glasses that are lighter, more beautiful and easier to use in real environments.

📊 Compare screen brightness

Device Maximum Brightness
iPhone 16 Pro About 2,000 nits
Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra About 2,600 nits
Current generation AR glasses are 3,000 - 10,000 nit
New Samsung OLEDoS 40,000 nit

The brightness level of 40,000 nit is about 20 times higher than today's high-end smartphone screens.

What Makes This Technology Special

Samsung demonstrated a 1.3-inch RGB OLEDoS panel in a dark experience area called The Big Dipper.

Seven screens are used to recreate the Big Dipper constellation. Of these, only two screens use the latest 40,000 nit OLEDoS technology. The results show images that are noticeably more vibrant, colors more vivid, and contrast far superior to other displays.

🌿 The big difference is that this technology does not need a traditional color filter.

Instead of using white light and filtering it into red, green and blue like conventional OLED, RGB OLEDoS emits light directly from each color pixel.

Benefits obtained

Advantages Impact
Higher light efficiency Reduces energy loss
Lower power consumption Increase battery life
More accurate colors, more realistic images
Longer life More durable equipment
Extremely high brightness Easy to see outdoors

Why XR Needs So Much Brightness

For phones, the screen only needs to be displayed directly before the user's eyes.

But with AR or MR glasses, the image must go through a system of lenses, reflectors and multiple optical layers before reaching the eye.

This process causes significant light loss.

In addition, the device also has to compete with external environmental light.

🌞 A strong sunny day can create an environmental light intensity of up to tens of thousands of nits.

If the screen is not bright enough, the virtual image will be blurred or almost disappear.

This is the reason why companies like Samsung, Apple, Meta, Google and Huawei are racing to develop super bright microdisplay.

What Samsung Is Preparing

In addition to the 40,000 nit version, Samsung also demonstrated

📺 Stretchable Display

🎯 3D Light Field screen does not require glasses

This shows that Samsung is not only focusing on smartphones but is also investing heavily in the Spatial Computing platform.

The XR Race Is Heating Up

Development Direction Firm
Samsung AR and MR glasses
Apple Vision Pro and next generation
Meta Ray-Ban Meta and AR glasses
Google Android XR
Huawei HarmonyOS Smart Glasses
Qualcomm Snapdragon XR Platform

Many experts believe that the XR race from 2026 to 2030 could be similar to the smartphone war from 2007 to 2015.

How the Market Can Change

If Samsung successfully commercializes 40,000 nit RGB OLEDoS technology, future generations of AR glasses can be achieved
