If you just need to block simple ads on Android but don't want to run VPN in the background, you can go to:
Settings → Network & Internet → Private DNS
Enter:
dns.adguard-dns.com
or
family.adguard-dns.com
This method does not consume as much battery as Local VPN but still blocks a lot of ads.
